new music

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. Things have been busy. Grad classes have been takin' up lots of time, I've been spending good time with my husband and friends, and enjoying the unseasonably warm weather.

You know what else has been cool lately? Good music! I just recently acquired the Bon Iver EP, the new Andrew Bird album (amazing) and just tonight purchased an actual record of Blitzen Trapper. There is a single that I LOVE off the new Franz Ferdinand album, and I'm totally stoked that the Decemberists have a new one coming up. Anyway, I've been be-bopping my head while driving around Springfield. You should too!

Oh yeah-- two more females worth noting: Lykke Li and LadyHawke!

...I am heading to the True False Film Fest this year (in a few weeks and I am so excited!) but am thinking this might be a good year to hit up a music fest too like Coachella, Bonnaroo, or Austin City Limits. Anyone?

Best of 2008

My husband, Jeff, just LOVES podcasts. One tradition we have when we drive to Iowa is to listen to some of our faves: The Moth, Wait Wait Don't Tell me, This American Life, 60 Minutes, Relevant Podcast, and sermons by Rob Bell via Mars Hill Church.

One podcast I found on our little trip last year was All Songs Considered by NPR. At the end of each year they do a rundown of the best of the year-- best new bands, best albums, best songs, etc. Last year I was so inspired (although all they could talk about was Radiohead- hands down the best of last year) I made a Best of 2007 mix. So, this year I did the same after listening to the long-awaited podcast on my way up to Iowa on Christmas night. Some are from their suggestions, some are my own, but here is the playlist:

1) Ra Ra Riot, Can you Tell, The Rhumb Line
2) Okkervil River, Unless it Kicks, The Stage Names
3) Bon Iver, Re: Stacks, To Emma, Forever Ago
4) MGMT, Time to Pretend, Oracular Spectacular
5) Mates of State, The Re-arranger, Re-Arrange Us
6) Noah and the Whale, 2 Atoms and a Molecule, Peaceful the World Lays me Down
7) Foals, Olympic Airways, Antidotes
8) Son Lux, Betray, At War with Walls and Mazes
9) Santogold, LES Artistes, Santogold
10) Death Cab for Cutie, Cath..., Narrow Stairs
11) Fleet Foxes, White Winter Hymnal, Fleet Foxes
12) Blitzen Trapper, Furr, Furr
13) Jenny Lewis, Pretty Bird , Acid Tongue
14) The Helio Sequence, Keep Your Eyes Ahead, Keep Your Eyes Ahead
15) Vampire Weekend, Walcott, Vampire Weekend
16) Beck, Modern Guilt, Modern Guilt
17) The Black Keys, Psychotic Girl, Attack and Release

Several things

I had a bad week and I'm so glad its over. I finally went to see the "Sensi" (Jeff and I see a guy that does alternative therapy-- healing-- accupressure that we call the "sensi") yesterday and he helped my leg a lot. He gave me some Dit Da Jao to take away inflammation. It smells horrible but is helping.
In other news:
I am at Cafe Rendezvous and just finished working on a big assignment for my Internship class. Glad thats done with. Its cozy in here. I tend to prefer Coffee Ethic for coffee, but they have good food here.
The new downtown movie theater opened today which I walked into-- it seems cool. I might go see Changeling there tomorrow night.
Its getting colder out which I like at the moment.
There is a Mystery Hour tonight.
I've been thinking about what I want for Christmas.
I'm glad the elections are over.
I watched my dad's dog Lilly play with Kesha's new pup Bosco forever last night and that was fun.
I slept in today and spent most of my afternoon in bed.
I am listening to a really good song by Iron and Wine.

That's about it.

New Beck Album

Just got the new Beck Album for a b-day present for my dad... he loves my sister and my's taste in music, which is lots of fun. We get him a CD and right away are able to download them.

I have each of Beck's albums and am always so impressed with each one he puts out. I loved Guero and The Information in the last couple of years... this one, Modern Guilt, seems a bit more loose, grittier, and melower, and I'm loving it so far. Its nice to have some good new music to listen to when you can't move. Here's the cover, find it at your local CD Warehouse or purchase on ITUNES. can't tell you what songs are my faves at the moment, they sort of all run together. Enjoy!
